Do Not Go To The Cloud, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200

My last article talked about the benefits of heading to the cloud.  The cloud is not for everyone.  Prospects frequently ask us why they should avoid the cloud – or delay their cloud purchase.  Here are some thoughts on when Office 365 migrations may not be a fit.

·         Control – you wouldn’t have control of the environment- it would be configurable, but not customizable.

·         Integration with other systems in the environment – may need to add hybrid ability.

 ·         99.9% uptime is not 100%; some clients can achieve better performance in their own environment.  Or at least want to be responsible themselves for trying.

 ·         Loss of visibility – unsure of when issues will be resolved, limited ability to escalate outside of Microsoft’s predefined structure.

 ·         Office upgrade- Microsoft will require the current version or one previous one for access to the platform which will require a regular investment in licensing.

 ·         Loss of functionality –  for example – mail enabled folders in SharePoint; Public Folders in Exchange are both not supported.  Business intelligence features of SharePoint are more robust for the on premise version.

 ·         Dealing with Level I support in a foreign country – it is horrible.

Cloud Migration Services: Who is Moving To The Cloud?

We are asked frequently about who is moving to the cloud and why they are choosing to take that initiative.  Below is a list of different reason and scenarios.  At Interlink, we are seeing that Merger and Acquisitions are the #1 driver of the cloud.  Clients have given us these reasons for making the move:

    • Not enough capacity in either environment to consolidate all users
    • Start collaborating with a shared space with SharePoint and Lync right away with the consolidation teams
    • Quickly build bridges to share free / busy and global address lists
    • Be able to break or negotiate contracts with existing providers
    • Get IT costs covered in the integration budget
    • More flexibility and less cash outlay if one entity has a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement and one does not

How Do I Choose the Right Cloud Deployment Partner?

Start with these questions when deciding on the right Cloud Deployment Partner:

    • Do they have a documented assessment process?  Can they show you completed examples?
    • Can they use Microsoft funding to make the assessment process at no cost to you?
    • Are they a Microsoft managed partner?
    • How many deployments have they completed?  Are they reference able?
    • Can they connect you to Microsoft to discuss their experience?
    • Are they a Microsoft certified Cloud Deployment Partner and Cloud Accelerate Badged?
    • Do they know about Microsoft fast track funding, up to $20K to help customers deploy Office 365?
    • Can they describe the four different migration methods and their pros / cons?
    • Can they describe your single sign-on options?
